In reflecting on this assignment and my re-write at the end of the semester, the biggest difference was that in the first draft, I discussed how I learned as an adult. It had lots of fluff and stuff. In the final paper, I discussed how adults learn. I was able to compare and contrast the various theories. I was also able to use the appropriate references to add legitimacy and relevance to my “take” on these theories.
So, the first paper wasn’t a total bust; I did label my adult learning style and from there was able to ascertain the basic assumptions of other adult theories. I believe that the importance of having a fundamental grasp on these is so we can use different teaching methods to facilitate optimal learning for all students. We must recognize that they do not learn the same to be the most effective teachers.
Another great concept learned, is the “why” we, as instructors, do things the way we do. These theories provide a foundation for our actions today and it is nice to be able to link those things together. For example, we have all had our students listen to us, watch us or other classmates do it and then perform it themselves. This is a very basic learning strategy and it is important as educators to be able to say that this practice is based on the Social Learning Theory which is influenced by four processes; attention, retention, rehearsal and motivation.
I will use these theories in the development of all future coursework I prepare and every time I step on the podium!
